Recently, Variety News published a story about Howard University landing yet another Scholarship fund. You can read the short article by clicking on the link above. While this is positive for black colleges that are struggling to keep their doors open and to pay their staff and provide services to their students, it raised a concern in my mind as a student myself, but not at an HBCU or Howard. In fact, this is the concern of many of the college students I teach, and I encounter in my programs at University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown and other colleges. It led me to ask a personal question that is on the minds of many students in my position: Do I need to transfer to HowardU or an HBCU because most of the help is pointed towards the black institutions, but what about students at non-HBCU’s? They are usually left behind and have difficulties accessing funding and adjusting in those colleges and end up quitting or opting to switch their programs or to transfer to a Community College. We will continue to follow this trend and update this story with tips on how to get through college while balancing life.
