I wrote some time ago in a Blog—The NeoLiberal— that the Family of #GeorgeFloyd settles for $27 million in a #wrongfuldeath Civil Lawsuit… What follows next? Justice! But does it stop there? That’s just one case. Let’s see where this goes….

What followed next was that Derek Chauvin was found guilty! On all charges except Murder in the First Degree! He was never tried for First Degree Murder. Fox News Report

Yet, after the trial family, friends, pundits and even the President Biden commented that it was a historic moment as it was a step towards better community policing and police reform. But this conviction is far from momentous for that purpose; the verdict is After—the—fact. It would be more a victory for the legal system in one sense, yet Chauvin murdered George Floyd in the first degree, so the victory is very minute.

Further, just last weekend while the Derek Chauvin’s trial was occurring, police killed a 20—year old black man (Daunte Wright) during random police stop in Minneapolis right on the doorsteps of the Chauvin—trial.

Daunte Wright

How does a police stop turn into a black unharmed man being shot to death. According to the police who fired the shot, he accidentally used his gun as he had thought that he was using his taser. This is a police of over 25 years of service firing a gun thinking he was using a taser. How incompetent and ridiculous. That is unbelievable!

Moreover, if city and some government officials go as far as to conceal police brutality and to cover up police abuse then what next much be scrutinized appropriately and accurately. In retrospect, I wrote in a blog post in The NeoLiberal Blog website on June, 2020, in an article entitled “PoliceReform in Doubt after Philadelphia Officials Covered up Police Illegal use of Tear Gas.”

The City Of Philadelphia had covered up #Police violence, and the New York Times Investigation had reported that #Philadelphia Officials Apologize: “Philadelphia Officials Announce Changes After Protest Response. The move came hours after a #NewYorkTimes video revealed that the Philly police had violated their own protocols during a response to a protest in June, even after the protesters had complied. By the way, I noticed that several businesses including #CVS Health, in #Philadelphia, were boarded up today—as if an hurricane or disaster was coming. But I realized now that they were bracing themselves for the storm failing a #not—guilty verdict of #Chauvin. Did the people’s will and threatened protestations and demand for a particular verdict sway the usual verdict? We may not know, but we are told that it was a victory for the legal system. But if this is the formula for justice, I’m down for it until it’s smell reaches me.

President Biden calls for national unity, George Floyd’s family sees it as a victory for those fighting against racial injustice. Yet, while there was a verdict, it’s still not equal. I am calling for an equal measure of justice, one that is equitable and an equal measure of policing, one that is fair. Let’s hope that we can lift up policing situations that do not go to trial before we can breathe and celebrate something else that is somewhat working —the justice/legal system.
